Minimized Stone Mortar @Ang Sila : Thailand

When talking about “Ang Sila” the first thing that Thai people will  think of is a strong stone mortar with off-white and light yellow color which is made from raw materials of granite and sandstone in Chonburi province, Thailand. The production using purely Thai craftsmanship that’s famous item in Thailand for a long time.

How to make it?

In the past, the stone carving profession of Ang Sila villagers it is a supplementary occupation after taking a break from Thai fishing. Later, the remaining stone fragments were used to make a mortar for pounding chili paste until becoming a famous product.

Currently, labor-saving machines are being used to produce faster but that makes the quality of the product not durable. Therefore, we continue to produce stone mortars from Thai handicrafts. Hand-beaten mortars are highly durable than mortars chirping with machines because of water pressure and heat to erosion rocks.

When rocks are heated and water causes brittle breaking easily not the same as hand-whisking. The stones that are used to make mortars will not be concussed. Therefore, it is stronger, tougher than a mortar made of a machine.

The real Ang Sila stones used to make mortars are becoming increasingly rare. It is very difficult to seek a stone at a stone at this time, resulting in the price of a real Ang Sila stone mortar becoming a rare collectible, traded from THB 10k to 100k up. When an ordinary mortar becomes rare, their value increased. So it is the only mortar that is pledged by the Thai Pawnshop.
